So this is a video I've been trying to make for a while but have had trouble with due to screen recorder issues. I've finally found a solution that works, albeit at lower quality, so please excuse any artifacts you might see here.

So I've been working on an RPG Maker game for a few months now and I've probably spent more time extending the game engine than actually building content for it. It's based on web technologies, which is good, but it lacks support for a few features I really wanted from this. So I added them.

Internet Fandom Is Killing Media - And It's Illegal

Copyright law assigns a large handful of rights to copyright owners without putting much thought into it. The entire system is designed to make established rightsholders' lives easier when "protecting" their work. Unfortunately, literally any of the actions that we would attribute to fandom are explicitly reserved exclusive rights of the copyright holder unless otherwise assigned or waived. The only legal thing one can do within fandom is to consume.

The biggest faux pas one can make when licensing copyrights and trademarks is to do it very publicly, especially now with stuff like YouTube, where your audience and your fans are directly connected. You cannot just go out and start doing things that sound like you're asking for money, unless you're specifically setting up something like a Patreon, where it's specifically stated that the money you're asking for will go back into the production of the content that people came for. And I don't think the Fine Brothers really understood this.
