As complained about previously on Fantranslation.org, the HTML5 Encrypted Media Extensions are a "standard" way of getting a DRM-laden video to play on a DRM-laden browser. The technical details are unimportant (it's shit), the main issue is that it represents, on a political level, acquiesence and surrender to large multinational media conglomerates whose CEOs wet themselves at night and need a security blanket that makes us all radically more insecure.

The main governing law regarding online services and copyrighted content is the "Online Copyright Infringement Liability Limitation Act" (OCILLA), or DMCA Title II, commonly known as "DMCA takedowns". It provides a legal requirement for online services to take down infringing content and ban users who frequently accumulate takedown notices.

All copies of the Nintendo 3DS game "Fire Emblem: Awakening" have been rendered useless after SEGA of America filed a DMCA takedown request to Nintendo. The takedown request, claiming ownership over nonexistent videogame Shining Force 4 and "any videogame, media, or human utterance even remotely similar to it", was filed yesterday, causing all copies of the game to be replaced with a notice that "Fire Emblem: Awakening is currently unavailable due to a takedown request by SEGA of America, Inc.".
